Photographer of the week: Brett Arthur

Here at Phink, we love music. Love it, love it, love it. And, as you probably know, Raleigh, NC, recently hosted the Hopscotch Music Festival. It was a big deal… 130 bands playing at 10 locations throughout Raleigh, for 3 days. Wow. And while we couldn’t make it to the shows, I got a great view through the eye of our photographer of the week, Brett Arthur. While looking at Brett’s images of bands like Tortoise, Panda Bear, and The Love Language on his blog were great, this got us thinking… let’s drive to Raleigh and meet Brett, face to face!

One sunny day later, we were having lunch at The Remedy Diner and talking about Brett’s thoughts on his photography and the way he approaches his subjects. He recently photographed a Nashville band, Ravello, where it was all about location and lighting, but at the same time, it’s all about the natural feel of the subject.

Brett says of his work, “I want the images to be a relationship between the subject and the viewer. That’s what makes a great image.  I’ve found myself taking more time to find the right location, the right time, and the right light for the job. I don’t want to jump into a shoot too quickly and not weigh out the options of all those aspects and it not all come together. Bringing all of these elements together puts me as close to the ‘final image’ in camera. This saves me time in post and will allow me to retain more quality in the final product, as well.”

When asked about getting his subjects to be themselves, he says, “Finding the right way to get them to relax and look natural has been key. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy shooting the more stern or posed shots, but for me, if my shot is natural, over all, I want my subject to look natural or find a happy median between the two.”

As we pay up and get ready to head back to Greensboro, Brett leaves us with a mantra all photographers should heed. “Experiment with the style you want to shoot. It is incredibly important. Get out and shoot what you want.” We agree!
